Emilia K. Petrillo is a Clinical Social Worker with STI Health and Wellness team since February 2024. Prior to STI, she worked for the University of Maryland Baltimore, UMB, where she provided mental health services to graduate students. She served as Executive Director of the UMB Student Counseling Center and Educational Support and Disability Services and Chief Mental Health Officer for the University.
Ms. Petrillo provided clinical care, supervision, and developed a dynamic and comprehensive mental health program that served the mental health needs of graduate professional students. As Chief Mental Health Officer, she served on the UMB’s Crisis Response Team to develop and deliver enterprise-wide workshops to promote health and wellness on campus. Ms. Petrillo has experience in leading the accreditation process for the counseling center.
With over 25 years of Behavioral Healthcare experience, Ms. Petrillo’s clinical work includes working with the Latino population providing bilingual (English/Spanish) and bicultural substance use disorder treatment to individuals and their families. She has worked as a Navy Family Services Clinician in Rota Spain providing mental health counseling services to active-duty members and their families. Additionally, she has experience in emergency room mental health crisis assessments, private practice, and non-profit community mental health direct service.
Ms. Petrillo works with individuals, couples, and has extensive experience in the treatment of depression and anxiety, life transitions, grief, racial identity, and multicultural issues. She enjoys the application of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Principles, Humanistic Psychology Principals, and Existential Therapy. She believes that it is a privilege to work with people facing major personal, cultural and relocation transitions in their life. She believes that counseling offers the opportunity to review past experiences and recalculate their lives’ direction.
Ms. Petrillo received her BA in social work from Skidmore College, NY and completed her MS in Social Work with a specialization in mental health at Columbia University school of Social Work, N.Y. She served in the National Association of Social Work, Maryland Chapter (NASW-MD) Board of Directors from 2021-2023 and the NASW-MD Ethics Committee from 2023-present. She is a Board of Social Work -Maryland approved supervisor.
