A Psychologist with STI Health and Wellness since 2023, Dr. Bill O’Connell counsels both individuals and couples. Prior to joining STI, he served the US Intelligence Community for 30 years as a staff psychologist and division level supervisor, retiring from federal service in September 2022 and taking up what he loves most – providing direct care to IC employees and family members.
Dr. O’Connell served two overseas tours with his family – in Munich, Germany and Tokyo, Japan. While a federal employee, Dr. O’Connell also did private work psychologically screening firefighters, police and security applicants and providing outpatient cognitive-behavioral therapy to anxiety disorder sufferers.
Though a treatment generalist, Dr. O’Connell has specialized expertise in treating anxiety disorders – including OCD, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety and Generalized Anxiety – as well as in the treatment of relationship distress. Also, father to 3 young adults, Dr. O’Connell is adept at guiding parents with children of all ages, including those blending families or coping with co-parenting post separation.
Dr. O’Connell completed his undergraduate degree at Georgetown University, his doctorate at the University of Denver and his pre-doctoral internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Kennedy Krieger Institute. He served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University and Clinical Adjunct Professor at the University of Denver School of Professional Psychology.
